Another reason Chastanet was eager to approve the Pearl of
the Caribbean project was the St Lucian people’s inherent
love of horses, himself included.
“My first pet was a horse, Mary, and I rode her to school and
everywhere else,” Chastanet recalled fondly. “There is a passion
for horses in this country. This makes it substantially easier for us
to introduce all the modern aspects of racing. Trinidad, Jamaica
and Barbados, which have been the leaders for racing in this
region, have been doing it for years and years. I think this is a great elections, we had been indicating that St Lucia should
opportunity to complement what they are doing.”
He continued: “We can take it to a different level or place. I don’t
want to say it is higher, but to a different place and market. Theirs
have been primarily regional and ours will support the regional
market, but we are trying to create a more global scale. Hopefully,
we can be one of the jewels in the crown.”
It is evident when speaking to Chastanet that his main goal
in everything he does as Prime Minister is to benefit and
improve St Lucia and its people, as well as provide them
with the best possible future. This can be seen in the latest
expansion to the Pearl of the Caribbean project, currently
known as Site C.

Site C is a reclamation project unlike anything the island
has ever seen before. It will include a state-of-the-art
marina that can be used for home porting for cruise
ships, luxury hotels, waterfront residences with private
docks, a commodities trading centre and much more. The
government will be expanding the airport as part of that
project and has appointed DSH Caribbean Star Limited as
project developer.
“It is a game changer,” Chastanet said. “Even before the
not expand its cruise ship facilities in the north, but
should take advantage of the international airport in
the south, and build facilities for the genesis boats and
home porting. We have been discussing with Carnival,
which is amazing. They have a home porting facility in
Barbados that they have outgrown. The timing of Site C
is phenomenal.”
Chastanet has proven to be true to his word and even truer
to his country. Under his leadership, the island of St Lucia
looks poised to become the new go-to spot in the Caribbean
for both business and leisure.
