INTERNATIONAL WINNER
His riding career started in New Mexico, where he was
licensed at age 16 in 1982. Shortly thereafter, he moved
to the Midwest, then to the spotlight of New York, where
he was leading rider for three straight years. In 1993, he
set a North American record with 63 stakes victories.
The following year, he won 68, including two races in the
Breeders' Cup World Championships, and he never looked
back. He won the Eclipse Award as the best American
jockey in both 1993 and 1994.
Small wonder that, when Baffert took over as Abel
Tasman's trainer before the 2017 Santa Anita Oaks, he
turned the reins over to Smith.
His Dubai success notwithstanding, most of Smith's
success has been achieved in North America. Still, he has
made history on the international stage as well, going back
to the days when it was highly unusual for horses – or riders
– based in the United States to travel to other jurisdictions. great this horse really was and is."
The year was 1991 and the horse was Fourstars Allstar, a rare
American entry in the Irish 2,000 Guineas at The Curragh.

battled through the final 100m with Star of Gdansk before
pulling out the narrow victory. Among the riders Smith
bested that day were legends Steve Cauthen, Freddie Head,
Pat Eddery, Lester Piggott and Mick Kinane.
Smith says he remains fascinated with international racing
and the allure that surrounds it – the opportunity to the
extend sport into worldwide reputation and glory.
"It's just incredible," Smith said before the USD16 million
Pegasus World Cup (G1) at Gulfstream Park in Florida. "I
mean, to get to showcase the talent your horse has on an
international level is amazing.
"You know, people not only got to see how great Arrogate
was last year here in the United States, but I mean everyone
all over the country, all over the world, watched the (Dubai)
World Cup. And what he was able to do that night was just
astonishing. I mean, it just proved and showed people how
Smith also has one Royal Ascot ride to his credit – a fourth-
place showing aboard longshot Gentlemans Code in the
2011 Windsor Castle Stakes. He said he'd like to make the
international scene a bigger part of his professional life.
"Yes, I'd like it to be," he said. "I would certainly love to
get to Royal Ascot, you know, this year. And, you now,
whatever's left in the years of my career… I've got maybe
some opportunities to go this year. I'm hoping anyway.
We'll see how it works out. But I'd love to get the chance to
win a few bigger races in Europe."
Smith will be 53 years old in August of 2018. He and Gary
Stevens now reign as the ‘old guys’ in the top ranks of
American jockeys, surrounded by a rising tide of new talent,
much of it from around the globe. He is more selective
now in taking mounts, with only 275 starts in 2017. Yet, he
finished second in the Eclipse Award voting, behind only
Jose Ortiz, who rode in 1,408 races.
As long as owners like the China Horse Club and trainers
like Bob Baffert continue to bring him horses like Abel
Tasman, Smith shows no signs of hanging up his tack.
