While the f irst two legs of the Triple Crown 03
were run in torrential rain and fog, racegoers were
blessed with clear sunny skies at Belmont Park
on the 10th of June, which increased the festive
atmosphere signif icantly. Justify was ridden by
jockey Mike Smith, who wore the red and yellow
star-spangled silks of China Horse Club. Teo Ah
Khing, Chairman of CHC, also led a delegation of
50 club members to root for Justify.
Prior to the race, the CHC delegates had the
opportunity to meet retired Hall of Fame jockey Ron
Turcotte, best known for riding Secretariat to win
the Triple Crown in 1973. Turcotte reminisced how
Secretariat emerged from an inside post position to
secure the Triple Crown. He also expressed confidence
in Justify and extended his good wishes to the CHC
delegates. Surrounded by thousands of fans, the
delegates gathered by the racetrack. After watching
the horses entering the barriers, it was time to witness
history being made.
Having drawn barrier 1 in a 10-horse field, jockey
Mike Smith steered Justify into the lead from start
to finish to win the Belmont Stakes by 1¾ lengths.
Clinching the 13th Triple Crown is a significant
achievement for China and Chinese horse owners
all over the world, as the American Triple Crown
is one of the world’s most coveted and celebrated
accomplishment in sports.
