Driven by the changing economic environment, Yitai
58 MAjestic Group, whose core business is coal operations, has
expanded to become a multifaceted business, with interests
in real estate, ecology restoration and organic agriculture
sectors. Last year, Yitai Group entered into a joint venture
agreement with Desert Star Horse Industries (parent
company of the China Horse Club) to form Inner Mongolia
Yitai Desert Star Horse Industries Company Limited.
“Yitai’s transformation is made up of technological
self-transformation and organisational transformation.
The technological transformation involves high-level
scientific technology, for example, the coal-to-oil project,
which utilises advanced technology to convert coal to
oil. Organisational transformation, on the other hand, is
accomplished through mutually beneficial alliances. It takes
a long time to specialise in a particular field; therefore, we
chose to work with the CHC in view of its expertise in the
field of equestrian sport.”
Born and bred in Inner Mongolia, horses have a profound
effect on Zhang Dong Hai. Horse-drawn carriages on
the streets of Ordos are Zhang’s earliest recollection
of the city before its transport system was developed.
In fact, horses have featured in Chinese culture for
thousands of years.
“Thanks to the CHC and its Chairman Teo Ah Khing,
I have a better understanding of the horse industry, and
find it rather interesting. You can develop the industry or
operate it as a business interest. Some time ago, I travelled
overseas to investigate and found that the horse industry is
very buoyant in European countries like the UK and France,
and the US, where years of peace and growth have led to the
highest standards of living; and equestrian sport is deeply
